Restoring Active Partition

“Recently, I was merging partitions on my Windows OS. Due to lack of knowledge of the process, I lost all the data from my active partition. Now, I am in deep regret and desperately looking for a tool to restore active partition data. Please provide me the relevant information.”

What is an active partition?

An active partition is that partition on a hard drive which is set as the bootable partition and contains the Operating System files. Each hard drive can contain only one partition that can be set as an active partition or bootable partition. For example, the partition that contains the Windows folder will be treated as an active partition on that particular system.

How can you lose data from it?

By default C: drive is the active partition of any Windows system. If the user try to change this then he / she might lose some critical files (Operating System files) from the active partition. While performing this task, the user might do the following mistakes –

  • Error while making a partition as active – Marking a partition as active is an advanced task which should only be performed by advanced users. If a person with less knowledge about this task, performs it then errors might occur which will leave the system in a hang state.
  • Making that partition as active, which doesn’t contain the Operating System folder – This might leave your entire system in an inaccessible state and you will not be able to load the Operating System as the active partition is not having the Windows folder that contains files necessary for a system to boot.

Where did the deleted or lost data go?

When a user loses some data or in this case loses access to all the saved data, he / she might think that the files are gone forever; but that is not the truth. The files still reside on the Operating System and will remain there until files are overwritten. So, keep the hard drive idle until active partition recovery is not performed on it.

Note – Once the deleted or lost files are overwritten, they cannot be restored using any recovery software.
