How to Restore Deleted Partition on Mac

Mac is the most popular UNIX based operating system developed by Apple Inc for their Macintosh line of computers. Mac OS is available in different versions with the latest ones being Leopard, Snow Leopard and Lion. HFS (Hierarchical File System) and HFS+ are the file systems which are used in Mac OS. When compared to Windows, Mac is a fast, reliable and secure operating system but when it comes to user interface, compatibility and price, Mac is behind Windows.

In order to categorize and store files of Mac system in a well organized way, users create different volumes like partitions in Windows. Having multiple volumes is highly beneficial, with which you can install and use different versions of Mac OS in same system. In Mac there is a utility provided along with the operating system by the name "Disk Utility", using which you can create, delete, and modify the size of volumes in Mac OS X. It is similar to Disk Management tool in Windows.

Sometimes in Mac OS, an entire volume gets deleted, which results in loss of considerable amount of data. Let us see some of the scenarios in which a partition can get deleted.

  • While creating or deleting volumes in Mac using Disk Utility, a user might accidentally delete an important volume without examining its contents. If such volume had any critical data then you might face severe data loss.
  • Apple Partition Map is a partition scheme used to define the low-level organization of data on disks. It similar to partition table in Windows operating system. Sometimes due to file system error or operating system crash, the partition map gets corrupted. In such a scenario, an entire volume could become inaccessible.
  • Sometimes your computer might shut down improperly due to power failure. Due to abrupt shut down of Mac system, the chances of Master Boot Record corruption are bit more. If it gets corrupt, entire volumes on your Mac system might get deleted or become inaccessible.

With some precautionary measures you can avoid the deletion of volumes on Mac system. Some of the important ones are listed here:

  • With a proper backup of important data stored in your Mac volumes, you can avoid the loss of data due to volume deletion or apple partition map corruption.
  • Prior to deleting any partition in your Mac system using "Disk Utility", just spend a few seconds in examining the contents and the priority of files stored. If you find that those files are important, then make sure that you haven taken a backup of these files.

In the worst-case scenario, if you end up deleting partitions without any backup, the best possible way to recover deleted Mac volume data is by using a good and safe Mac partition recovery software that can recover files from deleted Mac volumes easily. In case you end up deleting partitions on Windows, you can use a good windows partition recovery software to recover deleted partition on Windows.
